2014 News

Wednesday 10th December

As 2014 draws to a close it’s been another busy year for us here at the Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust. There have been many events we’ve been to and lots of people carried on our buses. We would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas & New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2015 at various events.

     


Friday 21st November

222 - GTR 484 is currently undergoing restoration at South East Coachworks in Kent. Here are a few pictures of how work is going:

     


Monday 20th October

On Sunday 19th October, 289 - E289 HRV & 367 - BTR 367B travelled to The Isle of Wight Bus Museum Running Day in Newport on the Island. The last event at the museum in Newport before they move to their new home in Ryde, we wish them well with the move. 289 was used in service on a mystery tour and visited Ryde and East Cowes.

 


Tuesday 7th October

On Saturday 4th October, Music in The City took place in Southampton. 71 - LOW 217 & 133 - TTR 167H provided a free heritage shuttle bus as part of the event.

 

The annual Fareham & District Model Railway Group exhibition 'Railex 2014' took place on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th October. 289 - E289 HRV provided a free shuttle bus from 1000 Lakeside to Cosham Bus Station via Hilsea Bus Interchange.


Thursday 25th September

On Saturday 4th October, Music in The City is taking place in Southampton. We will be providing a FREE shuttle bus for the event, where you can hop on and hop off at any stop. Buses start at 1pm from Guildhall Square then do a loop around the City via St. Michael's Square, Platform Tavern, SS Shieldhall, Platform Tavern, Mettrick's in High Street and then back to Guildhall Square. The last bus leaves SS Shieldhall at 7pm.

The annual Fareham & District Model Railway Group exhibition 'Railex 2014' will take place on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th October at 1000 Lakeside, Western Rd, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN. We will be running a free shuttle bus from 1000 Lakeside to Cosham Bus Station (which is just 40 metres from the Railway Station) via Hilsea Bus Interchange. The bus will run every 30 minutes during the event.


Monday 15th September

We took part in the Heritage Open Days on Saturday 13th September, 71 - LOW 217 & 133 - TTR 167H took part in the events in Southampton. 133 was used on the free shuttle from SS - Shieldhall to the Southampton Old Cemetery via Tudor House & Gardens. Whilst 71 operated guided tours from Tudor House.

 


Sunday 24th August

The Southampton Maritime Festival took place on Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd August. We provided a free bus service from the festival inside Dock Gate 4 to Railway Station & City Centre.

A number of buses were used, these were: 1 - JOW 499E, 64 - FTR 511, 71 - LOW 217, 133 - TTR 167H. 367 - BTR 367B was on display at the event. We also had a number of visiting buses which were: 748 - JRX 823 (Thames Valley), 1224 – 274 KTA (Western National) and 1577 – LLJ 443F (Hants & Dorset).

   


Wednesday 20th August

On Saturday 13th September, A FREE heritage bus service will run as part of the Heritage Open Days between SS Shieldhall (Dock Gate 4), Tudor House, City Centre (Castle Way), SeaCity Museum and the Southampton Old Cemetery. A number of heritage attractions will be open and there is plenty of things to do including:

• Free entry to Tudor House & Gardens (Saturday 13th September ONLY)

• A guided tour bus will operate from Tudor House at 10:30, 12:00, 2:00 & 3:30
(FREE tickets are needed as space is limited to 40 people per tour. Tickets can be obtained from the reception desk at Tudor House.)

• Free Guided Tours of the Southampton Old Cemetery start at: 11:30, 12:30 & 14:30

• Have a look around SS - Shieldhall

• The Southampton Tram Group & Dunkirk Little Ships workshop will be open, which is located near to Shieldhall


Monday 4th August

On Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd August, the Southampton Maritime Festival is taking place in Southampton Docks. We will be providing a FREE shuttle bus to the festival. The shuttle will run form the festival at Dock Gate 4 to West Quay Car Parks, Coach Station, Central Railway Station & City Centre (Under West Quay).


Monday 21st July

On Saturday 5th & 12th July, 133 - TTR 167H took part in the Hedge End Carnival and Totton & Eling Carnival respectively.

Sunday 13th July saw 289 - E289 HRV & 432 - NLP 389V head up Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill where the City of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Depot were having a rally.

Both buses were used in service with 289 going to Cosham Bus Station and 432 going to Fareham Railway Station.

 

One of the biggest bus rallies to take place in the south of England, the Alton Bus Rally took place on Sunday 20th July at Anstey Park, Alton. 71 - LOW 217, 133 - TTR 167, 335 - 335 AOW & 367 - BTR 367B took park in the event. 133 was also used in service at the event.

   


Wednesday 2nd July

Sunday 22nd June, saw the traders of Bedford Place in the City organise a Vintage Family Festival to celebrate Southampton’s 50th year of City status, 64 - FTR 511 was on display at the event. On Saturday 28th June, 133 - TTR 167H went to Wordsworth Primary School Fete, Shirley.

 

289 - E289 HRV was on display at the Wessex Transport Society which took place on Sunday 29th June in Ringwood.


Saturday 14th June

We've been busy during the first few weeks of June; the first event of the month was on Sunday 1st June, where we provided a free bus from Alton Train Station to Jane Austen’s House in Chawton with 64 - FTR 511.

With the Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow, the Baton Relay visited Southampton on Wednesday 4th June and 64 - FTR 511 was on display at the celebrations that took place in Guildhall Square, Southampton.

 

Then on Sunday 8th June, the Copythorne Steam & Vintage Rally took place. 64 was used to do tours of the New Forest. Whilst 1 – JOW 499E and 432 - NLP 389V were both used on the Park and Ride service to and from the event.

 

With such nice weather of late, on Thursday 12th June, we met up with the local Fire Engine Preservation Group, where we had an outing to the Forest Inn, Ashurst using 133 - TTR 167H for the trip.


Tuesday 20th May

The weekend of Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th May, we took our Swift 1 - JOW 499E to The Bill Targett Memorial Steam Rally in Eastleigh.

On Sunday 1st June, we will be providing a free bus service from Alton Railway Station on the Mid-Hants Railway to Jane Austen’s House in Chawton. So why not take a trip on the Mid-Hants Railway and then join us on 64 - FTR 511 to Jane Austen’s House.

The Copythorne Steam & Vintage Rally takes place on Sunday 9th June at the Scout Headquarters and Field in Copythorne. Use the Park and Ride which is at Copythorne Parish Hall to get to and from the event, which is open from 11am till 5pm. There will also there will be tours of the New Forest using our open topper 64 – FTR 511.


Saturday 3rd May

Over the last month, M.O.T testing has come thick and fast. With no fewer than 4 buses passing their M.O.T. 64 - FTR 511, 71 - LOW 217, 133 - TTR 167H & 402 - KOW 410F with all being taken to I.M Services.

On Friday 3rd May, 133 - TTR 167H attended Berrywood School in Hedge End, Southampton who were having a Transport Fest so their pupils could learn more about transport.


Monday 17th March

After successfully passing its MOT on Friday 7th March at I.M Services, 289 - E289 HRV went on a members trip to the Swanage Railway, where members enjoyed the London & South Western Railway Event on Sunday 16th March.

 


Monday 24th February

Over the weekend of Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February, we provided a free shuttle bus for the annual Solent Model Railway Group and Eurotrack exhibition from the event at Fleming Park, Eastleigh to Eastleigh Railway Station and Southampton Parkway Station (Airport). Over the weekend 1 – JOW 499E was used on the service.

 


Thursday 6th February

The Annual Solent Model Railway Group and Eurotrack exhibition is taking place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February at Fleming Park, Eastleigh. We will be running a free shuttle bus from Fleming Park, Eastleigh to Eastleigh Railway Station and Southampton Parkway Station (Airport) every 30 minutes from 9:30am till 4:30pm.


Friday 10th January

On Friday 3rd January , 367 - BTR 367B passed it's M.O.T at I M Services in Romsey after having it's gearbox rebuilt by one of our members.

 


Thursday 2nd January

On Wednesday 1st January the last Friends of King Alfred Running Day in Winchester to take place on New Year's Day took place. We took 1 – JOW 499E along to the event and No. 1 was used on service 22 from St Catherine's Park and Ride site to The Guildhall.
